DAY 32 - MAN PLANS, GOD LAUGHS

Augustine realizes that while the scriptures use "extremely simple words" and a "colloquial style" accessible to everyone, they also require "serious minds to exert themselves with concentration" to understand their depth.

This causes him to reflect on his "miserable" pursuit of money, marriage, and professional advancement. He compares his "ephemeral glory" to the fleeting happiness of a drunken beggar, concluding that both were seeking "time-bound as opposed to eternal joy". The tipping point is drawing near.
