As the saga of his conversion nears the climax, Augustine reconciled his academic background with the Bible, realizing that the simplicity of sacred scripture makes it approachable for all, yet deep enough for "academic giants" to find complex theology and mystical meaning.
Looking back, Augustine realized his "hapless scheme" of seeking unending physical pleasure as a source of happiness was the actual cause of his misery.
