Augustine provides a portrait of his mother as a true Catholic mother and wife despite the challenges of living in a pagan world. St. Monica was an example for mothers and wives today of being in the world but not of the world. Accordingly she the patron saint for those suffering in difficult marriages or experiencing verbal and domestic abuse.
